LAKE QARAOUN POLLUTION PREVENTION PROJECT


The Government of Lebanon has received a loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IRBD) towards the cost of the “Lake Qaraoun Pollution Prevention Project”. The project is implemented through the Council for Development and Reconstruction (CDR). The development objectives of the project are to reduce the quantity of untreated municipal sewage discharged into the Litani River and to improve pollution management around Qaraoun Lake. 

COMPONENT 1 – Improvement of Municipal Sewage Collection

Design and construction of around 300 km of sewage networks to connect to wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) in Zahle, Anjar, and Aitanit.
COMPONENT 1.1 - Expansion of the sewerage network to connect to Zahle WWTP
Construction of 107 km of sewage networks in greater Zahle, Saadnayel, Qaa El Rim, Hazerta, and parts of Ferzol and Taalabaya to connect these areas to Zahle WWTP.
COMPONENT 1.2 - Expansion of the sewerage network to connect to Anjar WWTP
Construction of 239 km of sewage networks and the rehabilitation of 55 km of existing sewage network in Bouerij, Makse, Mraijet, Taanayel, Wadi Delem, Zebdol, Jlala, Chtaura, and part of Taalabaya to connect these areas to Anjar WWTP. The CDR is constructing Anjar WWTP under Anjar, Majdel Anjar and Qabb Elias Wastewater Treatement Project funded by the Government of Italy and the Government of Lebanon. 
COMPONENT 1.3 - Expansion of the sewerage network to connect to Aitanit WWTP
Construction of 22 km of sewage networks and 6 pumping stations in Baaloul and Qaraoun to connect the villages of Baaloul and Qaraoun to Aitanit WWTP.

COMPONENT 2 - Promotion of Good Agricultural Practice, including Integrated Pest Management

Activities under this Component target 280 potato farmers in the Upper Litani Basin to support them in adopting Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), which would contribute to reducing the agrochemical pollution and runoff into the Litani River and Lake Qaraoun. The component is implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of The United Nations (FAO). It has four outputs: i) Assessment of current agricultural practices and development of a GAP-IPM program; ii) Training of professionals & facilitators in GAP-IPM practices; iii) Implementation of the GAP-IPM program at the farm level; iv) Evaluation and monitoring for sustainability.  

COMPONENT 3 - Solid Waste, Water Quality Monitoring, Capacity Building and Project Management

This component aims at improving pollution management around Qaraoun Lake through technical assistance.
